My personal experience as Mr Patel's patient:

In early March of 2006 I had a bowel obstruction. The story is somewhat long and you can read it on my blog if you wish: Click here

The long and short of it is that after several days of excruiting pain that came & went and visits to the local A&E, the pain progressed intensively. They wanted to keep me in our local hospital for observation overnight but by this time I realised I had little time left. A line would need to be drawn because the situation was dangerous and I felt that the help I needed would not be forthcoming from our local A&E. I thought of Mr Patel and hoping that he would help me, Pete, my hubby, called him from the hospital.

Mos of us patients do wax lyrical about our surgeons but the truth is Mr Patel was simply amazing. He took over my dire situation and swiftly arranged for me to be transferred to Kings Cross. I was carefully monitored there and given the correct diagnostics from the word go. I can't describe the immense relief I felt that I was finally in competent hands. I had really thought I was going to die in my local hospital and I arrived at Kings College hospital in a terrible space of fear and stress, not to mention searing pain.

After it was determined that I had indeed a twisted bowel, Mr Patel came through at 3am to operate on me. 3 am is an ungodly hour of the morning, bless him. And I was and still am deeply touched by this, after all I had not had my original DS with him and really he had no obligation to help me.

My operation went very well. I lost no bowel at all and had no post surgery complications. The care I had during my hospital stay was of the highest standard, I was very impressed by the kindness and care of Mr Patels brilliant team. I would have no hesitation in undergoing any surgery with Mr Patel. He is very skilled, very thorough and highly professional. His aftercare is excellent, patients are monitored regularly. His patients are extremely fond of him and once you meet him, it is easy to understand why. :-) The man is someone special. Unassuming, competent, calm and solid as a rock. The kind of person that you just know has both the brain power and skill set to move very decisively through any surgical crisis one might have (heaven forbid!) and to garner a high percentage of surgeries without complications.

I was extremely lucky to have him as my surgeon on that fateful night. It was a highly compassionate act on Mr Patels behalf (and I might add not the first one I know of either!). I always think how close I got to the pearly gates and I know he and his team saved my life. There are not words to thank him enough.

Over a year on I am back on my feet in every way. I feel well and my 2006 surgery has given me no trouble at all. I can feel in my body that Mr Patel did a truly fantastic job... sometimes I completely forget about surgeries altogether! I am even running of late! I am busy enjoying my life so much and I still see it as a blessing to be lived to the fullest.
